Statistics shows that Age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma  affect 119 million people  between 40 and above, And that number is expected to double within the next three decades(US census  2000) .

To protect your eyesight and keep your eyes healthy as you age, consider these simple guidelines:
  1. Avoid smoking: Smoking is linked with several health problems. Smoking increases your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, uveitis and other eye problems.
  1. Know your Family History: diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and age increase your risk for sight-threatening eye diseases. Check if these diseases are common in your family and take precaution.
  1. Get regular eye examination: An early diagnosis can limit any vision loss and help preserve your eyesight. Do a comprehensive eye exam. Dilate your pupils; this can determine your risk for major eye diseases which do not present any early warning signs or symptoms
  1.  Diabetes and high blood pressure Checks: Get regular physical check for diabetes and high blood pressure they can lead to vision loss from diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and eye strokes.
  1. Don’t ignore warning signs: signs like double vision, hazy vision and difficulty seeing in low light conditions, red eyes, frequent flashes of light, floaters,  eye pain and swelling should be treated urgently.

  1. Eat healthy: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables; they can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts by providing the body with antioxidants. Also supplement your diet with eye vitamins; this will provide the adequate amounts of nutrients required by the body to keep your eyes healthy.
  2. Get your Glasses checked: Rather than purchasing any glasses to enhance your sight, get prescribed eyeglasses and ensure that your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses is up to date.
  3. Protect your Eyes: use safety glasses to prevent eye injuries especially when working with tools or involved in active sports.
