Side effect of teeth whitening
§ A range of toxic chemicals such as Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide are mainly used by dentist as bleaching and disinfectant agents.
§ According to a report filed by the European Commission on tooth whitening products, it’s estimated that up to 25% of the hydrogen peroxide applied is actually SWALLOWED – and that’s NOT good for your health!
These toxic chemicals can cause side effects such as.
Prolonged tooth sensitivity which can cause mild or severe pain. Exposures to a whitening agent can cause pain that may last as long as two weeks. Light activated whitening systems account for the highest incidence of tooth sensitivity characterized by “sharp, shooting pain” that can last for hours or weeks after the treatment.
§ Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide can cause
Shrinking and receding gums resulting in exposure of part of the root and the crown of the tooth.Note that these toxic chemicals shouldn’t go anywhere near your skin or mouth! Yet they often do.
§ Bleeding & Mouth Blistering/burnt gums: Soft tissue irritation is a common side effect of teeth whitening chemicals. Severe cases may cause bleeding or blister in the mouth and gums. It can cause great pain and take days or even weeks to heal.
Stomach pain, Diarrhea & vomiting
The toxic chemicals used for whitening are harmful to the gastro-intestinal tract and can cause stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting when swallowed. They should never be swallowed, but they are often swallowed.
Painful throbbing in the teeth may occur for several days after bleaching especially if the bleach penetrates any exposed part of the dentin or cracks in the enamel which can irritate the pulp.
Note that this condition can cause the pulp chamber and the canal to be narrow and the consequence can be the need for a root canal.
