I guess you are familiar with the “eat good diet, exercise well and avoid tobacco products” advice given to mitigate the chances of cancer. But here are 5 surprising ways you may be exposed and you can prevent cancer.
- Toxic may be cleaner- Less toxic is safer.
Liver and kidney cancers as well as leukemia may be caused by the solvent perchloroethylene also known as perc, which is commonly used in dry cleaning.
Workers who handle chemicals or treated clothes using older machines are more at risk. It is advisable to use less toxic wash. Hand-wash clothes with mild soap and dry them in open air. If necessary, spot clean with white vinegar.
2. Drink from Stainless steel -Filter your tap water
Drinking or storing water is safer in stainless steel or glass than plastic bottles. This helps to reduce exposure to carcinogens and hormone-disrupting chemicals. Drinking from plastic bottles can expose you to chemical contaminants such as BPA that leach from plastic bottles.(Study by the Environmental Working Group).
3 Get Cancer free- Get hands free
Your phones emit radio frequency energy that may be dangerous to your health.
Hence, it advisable to use hands free for calls or use your cell phone only for short calls or texts.
4. Avoid gas station exposure
Do not pump one more squirt of gas into the fuel tank of your car after the nozzle clicks off. This can cause fuel spillage and affect the fuel pump.
The fuel pump has a vapor recovery system meant to prevent toxic chemicals such as benzene from escaping into the air, which when inhaled into the lungs or makes contact with your skin, becomes dangerous. Benzene is a cancer culprit.
5. Marinate – Cut down on grilled meat
We are sure you have heard these. Processed, charred, and nicely prepared meats may be tasty, yet it contains heterocyclic amines. Heterocyclic amines and Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which is formed when meat is seared at high temperatures and the latter gets into your food when charcoal is broiled.
If you must grill your meat,
- Add rosemary and thyme to your favorite marinade.
- Soak meat for at least an hour before cooking. This is because; the spices are rich in antioxidants that can cut HCAs by as much as 87%, (Kansas State University research at).
5 Coffee Cups daily
A British study showed that taking 5 cups of coffee daily reduces the risks of oral and throat cancer. Participants who drank 5 or more cups reduced their risk of brain cancer by 40% when compared to those who drank less.
According to the researchers, tea also offers protection against these cancers, but coffee proved to be more effective.
